RESTORERS OF THE MARGATE SHELL GROTTO ARE SHORTLISTED FOR THE ENGLISH HERITAGE ANGEL AWARDS...

Regular readers of the Virtual Victorian will know how enthused the VV was when she first discovered the Margate Shell Grotto - so much so that her forthcoming novel which is called Elijah's Mermaid has a scene that features that very place; a scene that comes to influence everything else in the novel's plot.

It really is the most magical and inspirational setting, but the shells are very fragile and in need of restoration. An that is why the VV has voted for the craftsmen Robert Smith and Adrian Powell who have been restoring the shells - and whose devotion and expertise has now resulted in them being shortlisted for the English Heritage Angels Award 2012. Please consider voting too so that this wonderful hidden gem of a monument might be preserved for future years whilst also receiving the wider recognition that it surely deserves.

You can follow the Margate Shell Grotto on Facebook. The official Grotto website is here.
